Arial view of Road/Hwy. 40 as it winds along the Bridge RiverEntering the Bridge River Valley along Road 40 from Lillooet, BC.  Photo taken along the river before the Carpenter Lake Dam and the turn-off to Shalalth and Seton Portage, just above the switchbacks down to the bridge where the Yalakom River enters Bridge River.

Road 40 is a mountain road, well maintained by Interior Roads, Ltd.  Some parts of the road are still in gravel, though a large section of the road from the Carpenter Lake dam to Gold Bridge has recently been paved.  Always watch for rocks and wildlife.

The colours of Carpenter Lake Reservoir are always changing.  It is spectacular to witness the intense shades of blues and greens that blend into these waters.  The level of the lake also changes dramatically with the seasons.

Carpenter Lake flats in the early summerThis picture is taken from the eastern side of the village of Gold Bridge, looking onto the Bridge River tributaries that meander into Carpenter Lake Reservoir from the river.  This is a flood plain and though it is usually above water, as is evident by the green growth, in high run-off periods, this area could be under water.

Above the bridge into Gold Bridge the river runs rapidly most of the year.  Below the bridge, the river divides into many tributaries, and is usually calm and tranquil. The colours of the lake vary according to the time of year.

The Bridge River Valley is home to aqua marine jade magenta blue waters!

The water level in the lake rises and falls dramatically due to weather changes, snowfall, rain, and whether or not BC Hydro is releasing waters from the lake through the tunnels below Shalalth and Seton Portage, down into the Fraser Valley.

For more info about the lake, see: BC Hydro Recreation Areas

La Joie (Little Gun) & Downtown LakesA view of Downton Lake Reservoir, as seen from above Little Gun Lake nestled in the foreground.  Note the difference in the colours of the waters.  The reservoir is fed by glacial melt run-off from.  This gives a distinct colour to the waters.  Little Gun Lake is surrounded by private residential property. The drive up to the lake offers many spectacular views.

Gun Lake proper is slightly north of Little Gun. It offers excellent boating, fishing, and swimming.

One of the many great winter playgrounds in the Bridge River ValleyHigh alpine, back-country snowmobiling is very popular in the Bridge River Valley.

This photo was taken near the famous ice wall, on the Noel Creek sled trail.

Sleders taking the Lone Goat trail often visit the fabulous Ice Caves.

All valley snowmobile trails offer high adventure, lots of space to ride, vast vistas, & fresh powder.

For a description of more snowmobiling opportunities, see the Gold Dust Motel’s SledHead News.
